The “Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill” was passed by the House of Commons in June and now moves on to the House of Lords. The bill has plenty of detractors, including the former Conservative Prime Minister Theresa May, who referred to it as the “license to kill Bill.” May warned of “normalizing” suicide and of the message such a law would send to the elderly, mentally ill and disabled about the value of their lives. Kim Leadbetter, the Labour Party Member of Parliament who introduced the bill, offered the same tired assurances: The powers granted by the bill won’t be abused, this isn’t about devaluing the lives of the ill and disabled, and so on.
