That’s a personnel question
KPS board rehires principals, discusses other positions during February meet
Kingfisher Board of Education members acted on some personnel items and discussed several others Monday at their February regular meeting.
Among the moves was approving Interim Superintendent Andy Evans’ recommendation to rehire all the current principals on staff for the 2025-26 school year.
Approved were Makylah Tollefson at Gilmour Elementary, Lisa Meier at Heritage, Michelle Jones at the upper elementary, and Chris Farris as a secondary principal.
Farris is the junior high principal, but has also helped at the high school after former Principal John Harris was part of the reduction in force last December.
Assistant principals rehired were Melissa Slezickey at the junior high, where she also serves as the counselor, and Colby Connel at the high school.
Voting unanimously to approve Evans’ recommendation were Charles Walker, Carly Franks, Dana Golbek and Brad Wittrock.
The move was made after the board spent just under 90 minutes in executive session.
On top of discussing the employment of the principals, board members also reviewed candidates for the full-time superintendent position and also discussed potential candidates to fill an unexpired seat on the board.
That seat was left open when Terry Payne tendered his resignation, which was accepted by the remaining board members in one of their first items on the agenda.
Payne resigned after both he and his wife accepted positions in Oklahoma City and moved to the metro area.
He has just over a year remaining on his term and the board has 60 days to appoint someone to that post.
Evans spent just over an hour in the executive session with the board members, but the final 15 minutes did not include his presence.
Bill Reitz, who will fill Franks’ seat in April, attended the meeting and remained in the executive session for its entirety.
There were no action items pertaining to a board replacement or the superintendent position.
Other personnel moves made at the meeting included the staff at the administration office.
The first was to accept the resignation of Suzanne Bomhoff as superintendent’s secretary.
Bomhoff announced last December she planned to retire, but would remain on staff until others were trained to take over her duties, which included human resources and personnel coordinator.
As part of accepting her resignation, the board also voted to close the position.
The duties of the three remaining administration office staff members were approved after the executive session.
They were:
• Dawn Tollefson - encumbrance clerk, deputy board minutes clerk, deputy treasurer, deputy activity fund clerk, deputy HR/ personnel clerk
• Pam Werner - treasurer, activity fund clerk, child nutrition account custodian, board minutes clerk
• Heather Mercer - payroll and insurance coordinator, HR/personnel clerk, deputy encumbrance clerk, deputy child nutrition custodian Also hired were Cynthia Knapski and Shyanne Hollon as paraprofessionals at Gilmour.
In other action Monday, the board approved an outof- state trip for the track team to attend a meet in Wichita, Kan., in April; approved fundraising and planning for the vocal program to attend the Heritage Festival Contest in New Orleans, La., in April 2026; and approved a pair of board policy changes, including to the wellness policy for the district.
Board members took no action on the proposed 2025-26 school calendar that was on the agenda. Evans told the board he wanted to further address the calendar with principals and teachers before bringing it back to the board next month.
Also approved was the 2023-24 financial audit. (See related story.)
