Commissioners will explore possibility of crews carrying firearms

By

Kingfisher County commissioners at their weekly meeting on Tuesday began studying authorization for employees of commissioners’ road crews to start carrying firearms.

District 2 Commissioner Michael Sparks, who initiated the proposal, explained that road crew employees often work alone in isolated areas.

“You never know what may occur in this time,” he said, referring to increased violence episodes nationwide.

He then made the motion to table the agenda item to next week’s meeting after Chairman Anthony Schwarz, District 3, suggested extra time to explore legal ramifi cations with the district attorney’s office and insurance representatives.

District 1 Commissioner Jeff Moss, vice chairman, joined Sparks and Schwarz in voting to table action until next week’s regular meeting on Monday.

Commissioners met on Tuesday this week because the courthouse was closed Monday for the Labor Day holiday.

In other action during the 14-minute meeting, commissioners voted to approve the following agenda items:

• Disposing of surplus computers, generator transformer, a portable radio and two gas detectors for the emergency management offi ce, which were declared as surplus the preceding week;

• Disposing of 911 Emergency Calling Center property, including a laptop computer and four radio components, also declared as surplus a week earlier;

• A 12-inch layflat pipeline road crossing for Ovintiv Energy located six miles east and three miles north of Okarche, District 1;

• A road crossing permit for BCE MACH III Midstream Holdings, for a 10-inch poly line located six miles east and four miles north of Okarche, also in District 1, and,

• Four changes in requisitioning and receiving offi cers for the county health department, including removing Suzie Miles as requisitioning officer and adding Katelynn Braswell and removing Ana Medrano as receiving officer and adding Alexy Maroney;
