Mother Nature making presence felt

With freezing temps, snow expected to arrive, schools alter basketball tourney schedules

By

By most standards, it has been a tame winter thus far.

If forecasts are correct, that changes this weekend.

A snap of bitter cold could keep temperatures below freezing for more than three full days, which will include wind chills in the negatives.

With that is the projection of snowfall for much of the state on Saturday and most of it will be signifi cant.

The latest forecasts call for a large portion of Oklahoma to receive about 3 inches, including Kingfisher County.

That system will have several bands in which up to 6 inches or more are dropped.

While our area is expected to see mostly snow, there could be a wintry mix - including ice - with the system as well.

That is expected to impact further south, mostly in Texas.

Still, travel is expected to be impacted and the timing couldn’t be worse for local basketball teams and fans.

This weekend is the final major tournament weekend of the season.

All six Kingfisher County high schools are playing in tournaments, most of which were originally scheduled to begin Thursday and run through Saturday.

Three of those schools are hosting tournaments.

However, with the forecasts predicting the weather to turn south beginning Friday, the schools have gotten proactive.

All except one - as of press time - have altered their schedules and now will begin Wednesday instead of Thursday.

That includes the Buckle of the Wheatbelt in Kingfi sher, the Cashion County Line, the Hennessey Hoops Classic, the Skeltur Conference Tournament and the Cherokee Strip Tournament.

The lone exception so far is the West Central Tournament in Weatherford, which features the Okarche girls.

That tournament actually began Monday with the Lady Warriors knocking off Sentinel 63-24 in the opening round.

Okarche is scheduled to play again at 5:45 p.m. Friday and as of press time, that hasn’t changed.

Most of the tournaments changed their days to Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

The exception is the Cherokee Strip, which will play Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday.

The Skeltur Conference and Cashion County Line also altered times of their final day of their respective tournaments.

Following is a complete schedule of all the tournaments featuring local teams. Keep in mind that they could change as weather dictates further:
