October trial date set in Myers’ case
The trial date for Kingfisher High School’s former football coach has been set.
Jeff Myers will face a jury trial beginning 9 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14.
That order was handed down Wednesday morning by District Judge Paul Woodward as Myers made an appearance in Kingfisher County District Court.
Myers was charged in October 2023 with felony child neglect. The charge was filed after an investigation by the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation, which was prompted by a civil lawsuit against Myers, the school and other coaches by former player Mason Mecklenburg in July 2021.
Myers was placed - and remains - on administrative leave by the school district after the charge was filed. He lost his position as football coach as part of a settlement agreement the school district made with Mecklenburg in December 2023.
Myers pleaded innocent to the charge and the case was originally tossed out in June 2024 when, at the end of a preliminary hearing, Asso- ciate District Judge Allison Lafferty said she found insufficient evidence that child neglect had occurred.
The state appealed the decision and it was overturned by Judge Tom Newby a month later.
Myers’ attorneys also filed a motion to quash for insufficient evidence, but Woodward denied that motion last December.
Myers is required to make another bond appearance June 11 and the pre-trial conference was set for 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 3.
