Sonic icon retires after 40 years

By

He’s delivered us food and drinks for multiple generations. He was that familiar voice in the Sonic stall speaker. He’s trained other carhops and mentored countless fellow employees. His customers loved him and he loved them - and even their pets - back. And now? Well, he can do whatever he wants. Some four decades ago, Justin Waggoner needed a job and the Kingfisher Sonic Drive-In was hiring. He accepted the position “and thought I would give it a try until I found something else.” Now, 40 years later, Waggoner has found that something else. Retirement. A Kingfisher and Sonic institution, Justin Waggoner retired Monday after 40 years at the Kingfisher location. The most iconic figure in local fast food was recognized by Sonic during a reception and was also the subject of several interviews from Oklahoma City media as dozens of community members also showed up to tell their favorite carhop goodbye. The Dover High School graduate was known to not only provide great customer service for four decades, but was also a favorite of his regular customers’ pets and was always ready to share a treat with the furry friends. That included Robyn Tompkins’ dog, Harley, which Waggoner is shown petting Monday in the bottom right photo. Waggoner has several cats of his own at home and Tompkins said his cats would be jealous of him giving treats to everyone else’s pets...so she brought him some cat treats to share with his own pets. [Editor’s note: The Times & Free Press featured Waggoner when he was recognized by Sonic for 35 years of service. That story by Twila Adams can be found in our digital archives in the July 19, 2020, edition. Additional photos from Monday can be found on the KT&FP Facebook page.] [KT&FP Staff Photos by Robin Johnston]
