About 75 people attended Hennessey United’s “Red Carpet Night” at The Merc on Thursday night.

The annual event provides organizations in Hennessey the opportunity to recognize their top volunteers and/or members for the year.

Scott Hajek, president of the nonprofit, was the emcee for the evening.

Organizations and their honorees were:

Friends of the Library – Ann Taylor, Ginger Cox and Dedee Krueger were honored for their work on a $500 grant that included 100 books to area pre-schoolers and 71 children 5 years old and under are getting a book each month. Countywide, 388 children are being helped by that program which is sponsored by the Oklahoma Friends of the Library.

The Golden Eagles – Lavonne O’Bryant, who is also director of the Hennessey Senior Citizen Center, was recognized for getting other senior citizens involved in the Golden Eagle activities, and trips.

Hennessey Farmerettes – Second-term President Pansy Wheeler was honored as the Farmerettes Member of the Year for her leadership and work on many local and county projects, including her newspaper stories about that group’s meetings and projects.

Lion of the Year – Jewel Babiak was chosen by the Hennessey Lions Club as their Member of the Year. President Tim Riddle said the club had nominated her in the past, but she said she didn’t need “another plaque.” Then she recently missed a couple of meetings and that’s when they selected her, said Riddle. Mrs. Babiak said she’d also received that award 22 years ago during the club’s banquet and that Riddle was the one who’d presented it to her the first time. She also recalled Riddle saying during that first presentation: “And she sleeps with our president (who was her husband, Paul Babiak).”

Ministerial Alliance – Recognized for their work at the community food pantry were Lisa Bossa, Jeannie and Kenny Brown, Pattie Cameron and Denise Brim.

Powder & String Club – For the second time that club honored Jack Choate III as its Member of the Year for his support of the organization.

Teachers of the Year – Principals Barry Crosswhite, Ricardo Tarango and Mark Cox recognized teachers Flo Conway (early childhood and elementary), Chelli Rapp (middle school) and Kim Gritz (high school and district). Superintendent Jason Sternberger was also present.

Hennessey United – President Scott Hajek presented the organization’s top award to Dagan Hardin for his years of board service on many projects, especially their annual Wine & Chocolate Festival fundraiser that started in 2011.
