Hennessey Fire Department was recently approved to host an Oklahoma State Fire Association Firefighter 1 class.

Those sessions will be held in the HFD’s station and new addition and run from Nov. 21 through Jan. 29, 2025, wrote Fire Chief Brandon Scott in his October report to the Hennessey Board of Trustees.

So far, Hennessey’s six new firefighter candidates will be joined by nine other students from these communities: two each from Omega, Fairview and Waukomis, and one each from Cashion, Isabella and Ringwood.

Hennessey’s firefighter candidates are Matthew Bruner, C.W. Daniel, Sergio Gomez, Randy Gregory, Luis Lara and Skylar Mc-Call.

HFD was required to have “a sizable classroom and areas to perform skills and had to guarantee 12 in the class,” said Scott, who is also a certified Advanced Emergency Medical Technician.

There were 22 calls on Scott’s September run report: three grass fires/ mutual aid, one structure fire/smoke investigations/ alarms; one vehicle fire accident (trapped victim/ gas leak),17 medical assists, and LIFE EMS had 15 calls.

Firefighters “trained with extrication tools on meeting night,” he wrote; new hand-held radios were ordered and the air compressor in a tanker is be- ing sent to have the air compressor replaced.

The HFD hosted a FEMA Radio 100-101 class Tues., Oct. 1, and firefighters cooked and served up steak sandwiches at Hennessey United’s Wine and Chocolate Festival Sat., Oct. 5, at Memorial Park.

Firefighters will also participate in elementary school and Sooner Start programs this month, and some plan to attend other training events, including: Haz-Mat Awareness, ICS (Incident Command System) 100, 200, 700 and 800, and chief training.
