2 city races develop
Candidates file for 2 commission seats; Geoff Covalt goes unopposed as mayor
Races have developed for two of the three openings on the Kingfisher City Commission.
The filing period for potential candidates ended Feb. 7.
When it did, it was determined Geoff Covalt would run unopposed as Kingfisher’s mayor.
Covalt was voted mayor by city commissioners last year after Roxie Alexander retired from office.
He was the lone candidate to file for that position, but Seat 1 and Seat 2 will have races.
Filing for Seat 1 were incumbent Kyle Mecklenburg and Dyamonique McCarty.
That is for a four-year term.
Incumbent Kaci Farrar filed for Seat 2 as did Jeff Wittrock.
Those two are vying to complete a one-year unexpired term. Farrar was appointed to the seat in October when Covalt was appointed mayor.
The election for the two Kingfisher seats will be Tuesday, April 2.
Candidates were also able to file for the two new seats on the Okarche Board of Trustees.
J.D. Mueggenborg filed for Trustee Seat 4 and Jon David Alig for Trustee Seat 5.
Both are unopposed. Those filings were made in Canadian County.
Mueggenborg will fill a one-year term in Seat 4 and Alig a three-year term in Seat 5.
That will put the seats in line to have elections every two years with seats 1, 3 and 5 up for grabs in one cycle, then 2 and 4 in the other.
