Record breaking.

That’s the kind of day Kingfisher choir students had Sept. 25 at Weatherford Middle School.

More than 30 Kingfisher students took part in the Western Oklahoma Choral Directors Association (WOCDA) regional choir auditions and, ultimately, 20 of them earned a spot.

“This is the most we’ve had audition and the most who have made the choir,” said Diann Magnus, KPS choral director.

Students in seventh-ninth grades were trying to earn spots in the junior high choir.

The high school choir is for 10th-12th grades.

Earning their place in the high school choir were seniors Ethan Willimon and Stormie Shockey; junior Katie Beecher; sophomores Elijah Johnson, Jayden Shaver, Olivia Reyes, Bianca Garcia and Raechel Evans.

On the junior high choir are freshmen Avery Stutts and Caleb Hendryx and KMS students Julianna Austing, Caroline Swafford, Brittan Bollenbach, Indy Barker, Kya Bolner, Elizabeth Pickle, Isabella Gomez, Rylee Hamil, Sydnie Toepfer and Amay Reyes.

The students will perform Oct. 25 at the WOCDA Festival on the campus of Southwestern Oklahoma State University.

Students will work on and perform the music they will be auditioning with at All-State. Those tryouts begin Oct. 30.

The pieces can be diffi cult, noted Magnus.

“Generally the junior high music is on a high school level and the high school music is on a college level,” she said.

The junior high choir is learning a song called “Hutia te Rito” that comes from a chant from the Waiata tribes in northern New Zealand. They’ll also perform a pair of songs in English.

The high school choir is learning a Latin piece - “Te Deum” - by F.J. Hadyn and a German song - “Geistliches Lied op 30” - by Johannes Brahms. They’ll also perform two other English pieces.

All-State is a multiround tryout process that takes part in four parts of the state.

Kingfisher’s students will try out at the northwest quad at Enid High School in the first round.

The students in each voice part (soprano 1 and 2, alto 1 and 2, tenor 1 and 2, and bass 1 and 2) with scores ranking them in the top 25 will advance to the second round.

That round is Nov. 13 at the University of Central Oklahoma for high school students.
