27 KPS students selected to have written submissions published in upcoming book
More than two dozen Kingfisher Public Schools’ students will have their work published in an upcoming book.
Stacy Ruhl’s students at Yellowjacket Academy as well as creative writing students at Kingfisher High School were tasked with an assignment to write a mystery in less than 100 words.
It was part of a competition held by Young Writers.
More than 8,000 submissions were made nationwide.
Editors picked the stories that will be included in the upcoming book – Unsolved - Criminal Words – which is set to be published in April.
Yellowjacket Academy students who had their work selected for publication were Jason Wilson, Jonathan Stephenson, Alex Davis, Braxten Toepfer, Sara Leck, Finn Duncanson, Tony Scott, Cherith Stephenson, Alex Fabio, Kylie Medina and Myah Arnold.
Selected from Ruhl’s creative writing class were Hayden Green, Maria DeLaTorre, Jace Johnson, Reid Witt, Brett Schlabs, Nathaniel Derrick, Alex Montiel, Ryan Sanders, Hannah Francis, Breona McConnell, Brayden Osterholt, Jose Soto and Luie Torres
Also Trinity Jordan and Ariana Rivera of Riley Dacus’ class were selected.
“I am extremely proud of all of them,” Ruhl said. “It is not easy to write a mystery in less than one hundred words. Each student did an excellent job with selective word choice, plot development, and imagination.
“It is an honor to be working with such brilliant and hard working students.”
Students received a bookmark and a certificate to mark their achievements.
The school will receive a complimentary edition of the book and additional copies will be for sale.
Young Writers was established in 1991 in Massachusetts.
According to its website, “We pride ourselves on encouraging young writers to read, write and enjoy poetry as well as creative writing. Having work published boosts confidence, nurtures creative talent and showcases creativity.”
