86-year-old jail coming down soon; county oks demo bid

By

Kingfisher County commissioners approved the low bid submitted by Jackson Wrecking of Enid to tear down and remove the old jail and sheriff’s office on the courthouse block Monday.

Jackson’s bid of $75,000 was under the pre-bid estimate of $77,000.

Other bidders included: M&M Wrecking of Blanchard, $94,510; K&M Wrecking of Oklahoma City, $148,850, and Total Demolition Services of Oklahoma City, $140,588.

District 2 Commissioner Ray Alan Shimanek of Hennessey, who made the motion to accept the low bid, expressed surprise at the low bid submitted by Jackson Wrecking, indicating he feared a larger number.

District 3 Commissioner Heath Dobrovolny, commission chairman, and District 1 Commissioner Jeff Moss, vice-chairman, voted with Shimanek in making the decision unanimous.

Commissioners also voted to proceed with a bid of $39,200 for fencing at the Chisholm Trail Museum submitted by American Fence Co. a week earlier.

Commissioners voted to solicit new bids on a second museum project – labor and materials to renovate an existing metal building into a large exhibit space and workshop – after taking no action on an earlier bid solicitation due to delayed architectural changes to the project.

Bids will be accepted until 4 p.m. Oct. 14 at the office of the County Clerk Jeannie Boevers and will be opened at the Oct. 17 meeting of the board of county commissioners.

Specifications for the project are available in bid packets at the county clerk’s office.

Commissioners approved three claims to the Oklahoma Office of Juvenile Affairs for transporting underage detainees to state-approved detention centers – one of $616.86 for April, another of $259.20 for June and a third of $319,63 for July.

A claim of $2,468.33 from Circuit Engineering District 8 for a Hydrovac mechanism used to locate utility lines near Uncle John Creek bridge on East Robberts Avenue received approval for District 1. The bridge is scheduled for demolition and replacement later in the year.

Also approved were right-of-way permits for pipeline work as follow:

• K&J Construction – a 12-inch lay flat line and a three-inch poly line six miles south and two miles east of Hennessey, District 2.

• Markwest Energy – two four-inch steel lines, located one mile north and three miles east of Okarche, District 1.

• Ovintiv Energy – two 12-inch lay flat lines in District 1, one located four miles north and one mile east of Okarche, and the second located three miles north and three miles east of Okarche.

• Howard Drilling Co. – 12-inch lay flat line 10 miles east and two miles south of Kingfisher, District 1.

• Howard Drilling – Four-inch lay flat line six miles east of Kingfisher.

• Kingfisher Rural Water District No. 3 – line located at County Roads 2830 and 730, District 3.

Present at the meeting in addition to commissioners were Boevers as official minute clerk, and County Engineer Nik Smith.
