Harvesters waiting for county fields to dry up
Rain delays have area grain producers on pins and needles, waiting on weather dry enough to harvest.
Randall Varnell, manager of Wheeler Brothers Grain Co. in Kingfisher, estimated producers may return to their fields on Wednesday, provided no additional rain falls in the meantime.
“The grain would likely be dry enough today, but the fields are probably too soft,” he said Tuesday.
Jason Kroener, CHS manager, saw a possibility of the harvest resuming Wednesday, but pointed to forecasts calling for additional rain. Cashion Grain and Feed reported that harvesters were still being held back there after more rain fell there Monday night.
Debbie Gaither at CHS at Hennessey said the rainy weather was still holding up the harvest in that area.
Okarche Grain and Feed Elevator had a couple of loads of wheat arrive Sunday from what producers called “higher ground” but nothing came in Monday or Tuesday.
Wet fields were the primary cause of the holdup there, also, a representative said.
Fields saw some activity late last week, but persistent rains slowed it to a halt.
According to Steve Loftis’ National Weather Service station, Kingfisher has received more than an inch of rain since the start of last weekend.
