All levels of KPS choir provide standout district performances
At the very least, Kingfisher choir students are excellent.
Mostly, however, they’re superior.
They proved that at multiple OSSAA district competitions in recent weeks and their performances earned them the right to compete at state.
First up was the district solo and ensemble competition held Feb. 25 in Alva for both high school and junior high performers.
High school students who earn a “Superior” rating by the judges at district advance to state, which will be held April 24. (Note: Junior high soloists and ensembles don’t have a state competition.)
High school soloists who received the highest rating and advanced to state were Shilo Willingham, Bianca Garcia, TJ Washington and Ethan McLean.
Junior high students who scored superiors were Evelyn Martin, Valeria Rodriguez, Brailyn Schroeder and Jackson Garrett.
Both high school varsity ensembles also earned a superior and advanced to state.
The two ensembles make up a combination of everyone in choir with 12 students in each ensemble.
The KHS junior varsity earned a superior and advanced to state as well.
The junior high women’s ensemble of Korbie Baartman, Magaly Charqueno, Tinilie Davidson, Brailyn Schroeder, Abigail Smith, Naomi Smithson, Sydney Snyder, Legaci Goodblanket, Aateri Nowlin, Parker LeForce, Evelyn Martin and Hannah Johnson received an excellent rating by the judges.
Junior high soloists earning an excellent were Tinlie Davidson, Sydney Snyder, Naomi Smithson, Magaly Charqueño, Hannah Johnson and Abigail Smith.
High school solists earning an excellent rating were Indy Barker, Haven Branson, Elizabeth Pickle, Thaddaeus Stephenson, Julianna Austin and Kynslee Nance.
All students who earned superior received an OSSAA district medal and all students who earn an excellent received an OSSAA district certificate.

Singers then took part in the district choir contest held March 12 at Carl Albert High School.
Each choir is required to sing a piece from OSSAA’s prescribed music list and an a cappella piece.
Junior high women’s choir sang “Alleluia” by Ruth Elain Schram and “I Sing Because I’m Happy” adapted by Rollo Dilworth.
Junior high mixed choir (soprano, alto, bass) sang “Zum Gali Gali” - an Israeli folk song - by Victor C. Johnson and “Kyrie” - a Latin piece - by Jerry Estes.
High school Varsity Voices sang a Latin piece, “Cantate Domino,” by Giovanni Anerio, and “Stars I Shall Find” by Victor C. Johnson.
Both junior high choirs earned superiors from every judge for their on-stage performances and superior in sight reading.
Because they earned straight superiors, each choir received the highest honor of “Outstanding Achievement.”
Varsity earned a superior on stage and an excellent in sight reading, which advanced the choir to state.
Varsity will compete at state on April 3 at Stillwater High School.
