Altar Society holds last meeting before taking summer recess

By

The Sts. Peter & Paul Altar Society met in the home of Cynthia Eaton on Wednesday evening, May 14 to close out its year before the summer recess.

The year had been focused on the “Seven Corporal Works of Mercy.”

The corporal works of mercy are to feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked, shelter the homeless, visit the sick, visit the captive and bury the dead.

A lesson was given each month emphasizing ways to incorporate interventions to practice these virtues in daily life, especially focused on local needs in Kingfisher.

A brief business meeting was conducted by President Ann Finley.

Scholarship awards of $500 will be gifted to Mia Franco, Natalie Garrett, Karen Munoz and Alondra Ortega in recognition of their service to the parish during their high school careers.

The group has made an effort this year to donate money to Kingfisher agencies that serve the needs of our local citizens.

It was approved to donate additional funds before closing out the Altar Society year.

Meals on Wheels is currently at capacity, serving 60 meals five days a week and will receive $2,500.

The City of Kingfisher will receive $2,000 for electric bill assistance or fans for the summer season.

Cimarron Electric will also receive $2,000 for electric bill assistance and fans.

Finally, Kingfisher Public Schools’ lunch program will receive $2,000 for delinquent meal accounts.

Irene Garrett reported that the Lenten sewing project had made 35-40 quilts and afghans, in ad-dition to the diapers, baby clothes, lotions and baby bath supplies donated by parishioners.

All items were donated to Willow Pregnancy Support.

A thank-you note from the agency was read to members.

The group was reminded that confirmation will be 10:30 a.m. Sunday, June 1, at the Mass.

Altar Society will provide a cookies and punch reception.

It was announced that the church will hold a picnic/ hamburger cookout at Kingfisher Park on Aug. 16 after the 5 p.m. Mass.

The swimming pool will be open to parishioners from 7-9 p.m.

This event is being coordinated by the Altar Society and the Knights of Columbus.

After a meal together, the group adjourned for the summer.
