Altrua Club learns stroke awareness at meeting
Altrua Club members met Feb. 21 at the Chisholm Trail Museum with seven members present.
Stephanie Simpson, who works for Integris as a community stroke educator, presented a program on stroke awareness and prevention.
She began by telling the group that stroke is the leading cause of disability and the fifth leading cause of death.
She emphasized how crucial time is when treating stroke patients.
Simpson introduced the acronym “BEFAST” as a simple way to educate the group on the most common warning signs and symptoms of stroke which stands for Balance, Eyes (vision loss), Facial droop, Arm weakness or drift, Slurred speech and Time to call 911.
Simpson emphasized that teaching this to others could save a life and possibly one’s own.
She also shared video of actual stroke victims.
After presenting the information, she answered numerous questions from the group.
Simpson shared her contact information if other groups are interested in Integris’ free stroke awareness education for their organization: stephanie. simpson@ integrishealth. org.
After the program, the group was given updates on the museum renovation by Director Jason Harris. The March meeting was held at El Charro restaurant.
