Annual Voter Registration Report
Independents, Libertarians fastest growing segments
The Oklahoma State Election Board released its annual voter registration report Tuesday showing that while Republican voters hold the majority, Libertarian and independent voters also are growing in number.
Voter registration statewide increased from 2,090,107 on Jan. 15, 2020, to 2,218,375 as of the same date this year, according to the state election board.
In Kingfisher County, 460 voters were added to the rolls in the same two-year period, increasing from 8,009 to 8,469.
The Republican Party maintains a majority of voters statewide (1,122,582, 50.6%) and an even larger margin in the county (6,219, 73.4%).
Democrats are the second largest group in the state (696,773, 31.4%) and county (1,411, 16.6%).
But the Libertarian Party and those registered as Independent (no designated party affiliation) are the fastest growing segments.
Statewide, both the Libertarian Party (which only gained state recognition in 2016) and independent voters have seen steady growth the past two years, according to the state election board.
While Libertarians comprise less than 1% of both statewide and county voters, their numbers have more than doubled in Kingfisher County over the last two years, from 27 to 57.
The number of county Independent voters have increased 12.2%, from 697 in 2020 to 782 this year.
The Democrat Party has lost ground, falling from 738,256 (35.3% of total voters) statewide to 696,723 (31.4%).
In Kingfisher County, those registered democrat have dropped from 1,583 to 1,411 in the last two years, according to election board statistics.
The state election board reminds Oklahomans that it is easy to register to vote in Oklahoma. Eligible applicants can fill out an application using the OK Voter Portal registration “wizard” or download a voter registration application from the state election board website.
Applications are also available at all 77 county election boards, most tag agencies, post offices and libraries.
The next voter registration deadline is March 21, 2022.
Current voters who need to make changes to their registration can update their address (within the same county) and party affiliation online using the OK Voter Portal or by submitting a new voter registration application to their county election board.
