An anonymous complaint proved to be unfounded, but still left Hennessey officials scratching their heads as to why it was made.

“Our records are open,” said Hennessey Mayor Bert Gritz. “Our board meetings are open and if someone thought there was a problem they could have come to us.”

That was the mayor’s comments after Town Administrator Tiffany Tillman said there had been an anonymous complaint to the federal Environmental Protection Agency.

The allegations were that the town had “collapsed sewer lines, sewage capacity violations, excessive nitrates and record keeping issues,” according to the DEQ’s June 8 letter to the town.

The EPA handed it off to the state Department of Quality for investigation, which wrote there were “no findings,” Tillman said at the board’s Thursday, June 10, meeting.

“Our investigation did not verify a violation associated with this complaint,” wrote Laura Jardine, an Enid DEQ office environmental specialist.

“Therefore, the Department will consider this complaint closed.”

Gritz said town employees are “very diligent to make sure the water is good. We test daily. Our nitrates are fine. We’re taking water that’s already good, and making it better.

“This is an open board,” Gritz added. “And if we need to take action on something, we’ll put it on the agenda. I don’t understand why someone wouldn’t come to us.”
