Arson is suspected in hay fire
Authorities are still searching for suspects in a rash of fires last week that left one Kingfisher County farmer without several hundred hay bales.
John Peach of Hennessey told the Times & Free Press on Tuesday that he counted 396 of his round hay bales destroyed on property in northern Kingfisher County.
The bales were burned in an incident that began last Wednesday and stretched into Thursday morning.
“The firemen who were there told me it was their eighth fire of the day,” Peach said. “And all of them were believed to be arson.”
Kingfisher County Undersheriff Jonathan Riedlinger said most of the fires were set in southeastern Garfield County.
“Some were set to fields that had been cut and still another with some unharvested wheat,” Riedlinger said.
Peach said he had about 500 bales on his property and his son, Derek Peach, was able to get about 100 bales safely moved before firemen assisting on the scene said it was no longer safe.
“He was moving them while firemen were shooting water over the bales that were burning,” Peach said.
Peach added that his son has been interviewed by the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation.
Garfield County Sheriff Cory Ring told the Enid News & Eagle that fires had been set in the same area three years in a row.
Peach said he lost about 100 bales on the same property two years ago.
“I guess I’m going to have to stop putting it up there,” he said.
Peach did say there were security cameras on the property.
Riedlinger said authorities were searching for a specific vehicle Wednesday night and Thursday morning, but that person of interest was cleared of any wrongdoing.
He encourages anyone with information about the suspected arsons to step forward.
“If anyone has information or saw something, they can call us and remain anonymous,” Riedlinger said.
