Auditor presents KPS board good report in annual visit

James Kuykendall made his annual appearance Monday to discuss the Kingfi sher Public Schools audit.

It sounded like many of the previous reports he’s made to the board.

“Overall, it’s a good report and is presented to you that way,” said Kuykendall during the regular February meeting of the Kingfisher Board of Education.

Kuykendall is president of Britton, Kuykendall & Miller CPAs of Weatherford, which handles the district’s annual audit.

He presented his firm’s findings for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2023.

The district had an ending general fund balance of just under $8.273 million, which was nearly $621,000 less than the balance at the beginning of the fiscal year.

There were more than $18.9 million in total revenues collected in that general fund, according to the report.

Of that, nearly $11.9 million was from state funding, which Kuykendall said experienced some “ups and downs.”

That number includes the district’s gross production collections, but it also saw a decrease in state aid.

There was also about an $850,000 decrease in federal funding, he said.

“Other than that, financially in good shape,” Kuykendall said. “The audit letter opinion states that we feel like the balance sheet is an accurate description of the financial condition of the school as of June 30 of ’23.”

The audit did note five minor “deficiencies” for the district.

One dealt with payroll records in which an email scam resulted in a fraudulent expenditure of more than $2,700.

Others dealt with how expenses for federal programs were coded, technology purchases and inventory, issuing 1099s to all contract employees and properly entering appropriations into the accounting system.

Kuykendall told the board that staff had already submitted a response of systems that would be put in place to correct any of the deficiencies.
