Band members earn 1s, 2s at state

Five Kingfisher High School band members took part April 21 in the State Solo and Ensemble Contest in Stillwater.

Earning the right to compete at state were senior Brenden Hill, juniors Andrew Osborn and Destiny Buckner, sophomore Blake Mayfield and freshman KC Ortega.

Osborn played a snare solo and received a “superior” rating – or a 1 – which is the highest rating a contestant can achieve.

Ortega also received a “superior” rating on her flute solo.

Hill, Buckner and Mayfield played a brass trio and earned an “excellent” rating, which is the second-highest rating.

The five students earned the right to compete at the state level by earning a “superior” rating at the district level.

“We had 10 soloists and three ensembles who competed at the district level and earned 1s and 2s,” said Mandy Owens, Kingfisher’s band director.
