Beth, Andy Evans purchased duck that will benefit KJH students, staff
Some 768 ducks made their way across the K-Town Kove water, pushed by the power of multiple fans.
The cluster of rubber waterfowl were taking part in the annual Kingfisher Educational Foundation Duck Race, which in turn would support Kingfisher Public Schools students and staff.
Cheered on by fans in the stands - those of the human sort - the luckiest duck of all - the first to cross the finish line - was #310.
When cross checked with the database, it was revealed the duck belonged to Kingfisher Junior High.
The winning duck annually is awarded the $1,000 first prize.
But the duck wasn’t actually purchased by the school.
Rather, it was one of several bought by KPS Superintendent Andy Evans and his wife, Beth.
Evans credits his wife for the idea of supporting both the KEF and KPS.
“Beth suggested that we buy a few ducks,” Evans said. “We talked about it and decided we would buy a duck for each building. It’s fun and gives us a chance to participate in the Duck Race and support KEF.”
So the couple purchased a duck for Gilmour, Heritage, KUE, KHS and…KJH. KEF Board President David Blair and member Jeff Wilcox presented KJH Principal Chris Farris with the winning trophy and prize money last Tuesday.
The prize money will go directly into the KJH’s activity fund, further benefiting the teachers and students in the building this year.
Evans said he and Beth were more than happy to support the endeavor and even happier that one of their ducks won the race.
“Not every school in the state gets the opportunity to have such strong support from their community,” Evans said. “We really appreciate the hard work that KEF puts into this.”
