Bringing their favorite characters to life
Okarche Elementary School celebrates Read Across America Week with character parade
Okarche Elementary School recently joined the nationwide celebration of Read Across America Week, an initiative aimed at fostering a love for reading among students.
This annual event, held during National Reading Month in March, encourages schools across the country to engage in activities that highlight the joy and importance of reading.
Whether the teachers or the librarian read to the students, help them find books in the library or model reading for the students, reading is always in the spotlight at the school.
At Okarche Elementary, the festivities reached a creative peak as teachers and students transformed into characters from their favorite books.
From classic literary heroes to modern-day protagonists, the school was alive with vibrant costumes and imaginative portrayals.
The highlight of the week was a school-wide character parade held in the gymnasium, where students proudly showcased their costumes and the books that inspired them.
The event not only celebrated creativity but also sparked conversations about favorite stories and authors.
Read Across America Week is a nationwide effort to promote literacy and inspire young readers.
Organized by the National Education Association (NEA), the initiative emphasizes the importance of reading in shaping young minds.
Schools participating in the event often host activities such as book fairs, reada- thons, and guest reader sessions.
The goal is to make reading an engaging and enjoyable experience for students of all ages.
Principal Chris Roby expressed pride in the school’s participation.
“Our goal is to make reading a fun and integral part of our students’ lives,” Roby said. “Events like these help us achieve that while building a sense of community and creativity.”
The celebration at Okarche Elementary not only brought stories to life but also reinforced the importance of reading as a lifelong skill.
With events like these, the school continues to inspire its students to explore the world of books and imagination.
