Buckle Up: Filing ends; races begin

By
Christine Reid

All may be quiet on the Kingfisher County front this campaign season, with every county officer filing without opposition.

But several hotly contested state and federal races are certain to fill the void.

Re-elected Several races were over

Several races were over before they began for Republican incumbents who drew no opposition during last week’s three-day filing period.

County officers who will be seated for new terms include:

County Commissioner, District 1 – Jeff Moss of Kingfisher won a third term.

County Commissioner, District 3 – Heath Dobrovolny of Kingfisher will start a second term.

County Treasurer – Appointed in July 2019, Robin Rother of Okarche will start her first full term.

County Assessor – Carrie Turner of Kingfisher will begin her first full term after her appointment in November to replace the late Carolyn Mulherin.

Associate District Judge – Lance Schneiter of Okarche will return for a second term. Judicial offices are nonpartisan.

State Legislature

Filing outcomes were mixed for members of the legislature representing Kingfisher County, with two incumbents drawing no opponents and two others facing races.

House District 59 – Mike Dobrinski of Okeene will return for a second term. Paul Laubach of Okeene, who announced his candidacy several months ago, removed himself from consideration before the filing period.

Senate District 20 – Chuck Hall of Perry also won a second term without opposition.

Senate District 26 – Republican incumbent Darcy Jech of Kingfisher, seeking a third term, faces two GOP challengers, J.J. Stitt of Kingfisher and Brady Butler of Fay.

Others Re-elected

District Attorney – Mike Fields of Enid, Republican, also will be seated for a fourth term in District 4, which includes Kingfisher, Blaine, Canadian, Garfield and Grant counties.

Insurance Commissioner – Glen Mulready of Tulsa, Republican, is the only statewide officer to win re-election without opposition. He will start a second term.

And They’re Off

Races have developed for every other statewide office and the federal seats, where the main parties are sparring for control of Congress in the all important midterm elections.

Inhofe’s Unexpired Term

Senior U.S. Senator Jim Inhofe’s announced retirement, effective next January, created a wide-open field that drew 16 contenders, including a late filer with Kingfisher ties.

Dr. Randy Grellner, a Cushing physician and 1984 KHS graduate, was the last of 13 Republicans to file last Friday. He’s the son of former Kingfisher County Clerk Judy Grellner and the late Jim Grellner.

The GOP slate also includes several familiar political names: Markwayne Mullin, current congressman; T.W. Shannon, former Oklahoma speaker of the house; Scott Pruitt, former EPA head under Donald Trump and former state attorney general; Nathan Dahm, current state representative; Alex Gray, former National Security Council chief of staff; Luke Holland, Inhofe’s former chief of staff.

Rounding out the list that will appear on the June 28 Republican primary ballot include: Aam Holley of Bixby; Jessica Jean Garrison of Owasso; Laura Moreno of Edmond; Michael Coibion of Bartlesville; Paul Royse of Tulsa, and John Tompkins of Oklahoma City.

Presuming that no single candidate will receive a majority of the primary votes, the top two vote-getters will advance to a runoff primary in August.

The surviving Republican candidate will face three more contenders in the November general election: Democrat Kendra Horn, former U.S. Congressman; Libertarian Robert Murphy of Norman and Independent Ray Woods of Cleo Springs.
