Cashion academic team 3rd; Collier earns academic bowl All-State honor
Cashion High School’s academic team is adding to its collection of hardware.
The team took third April 2 at the Class 3A academic bowl state tournament hosted by the OSSAA at Rose State College.
Cashion placed behind state champion Preston and runner-up Crossings Christian School.
The team consisted of Jayden Collier, Alyssa Davis, Kaitlin Jolliff, Grayson Stewart, Connor McCabe, Jimmy Miller, Abe Ross, Colyn Sodowsky, Evan Hines and John Gallemore.
Collier was a team captain and earned an individual honor as well.
He was one of just 36 Oklahoma high school seniors to be named academic bowl All-State.
He was among those honored at a special luncheon on Saturday, April 9, at Redlands Community College.
Cashion, which was state runner-up a year ago, entered state after winning district, regional and area titles.
The team was also champion of the Oklahoma Central Academic Conference.
“I was very proud of their hard work and dedication,” said Teresa Karnes, who coached the team along with Kim Simmons.
“We practiced two mornings a week and the students studied a lot on their own time, which is what I believe got us as far as it did.”
Karnes and Simmons began coaching the team in 2016. Since then, Cashion has reached state three times. CHS was fifth in 2017.
Six members of this year’s team were seniors.
“Four talented underclassmen will be leading a new squad next year,” Karnes said.
Simmons is also moving on.
“She will be greatly missed,” Karnes added.
She leaves the program with a strong legacy.
“We’ve had wonderful students throughout the years who were competitive, enjoyed what they were doing and did their best,” Karnes said. “We have always asked them to have fun and do their best.”
