City manager hire looming again

Special meeting set Wednesday to discuss, potentially name choice

It appears - for the second time in 10 days - Kingfisher city commissioners may be ready to hire a new city manager.

A special meeting has been scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 5, at Kingfisher City Hall.

The agenda for the meeting was posted last Friday afternoon after The Times & Free Press went to press with its weekend edition.

The agenda calls for an executive session “to discuss the employment, hiring and/or appointment of the city manager.”

Once out of executive session, there is an agenda item for “discussion and possible action to hire and enter into contract with the new city manager.”

It’s the exact same agenda commissioners followed during a special meeting last Monday.

After meeting for about 75 minutes in executive session, commissioners voted unanimously to table the item to hire a new city manager.

The Times & Free Press was told after the meeting by City Attorney Jared Harrison: “They are continuing the process to make sure they have all the information they need to make their final decision.”

Voting for it were Dawn Taylor, Kyle Mecklenburg, Geoff Covalt and Debbie Burpo.

Mayor Roxie Alexander was unable to attend the meeting due to medical reasons.

The medical issue also kept her from attending the previous special meeting held on June 21 when two candidates for the position were interviewed over the course of an executive session that last about fourand- a-half hours.

It was the day after that meeting that commissioners called the June 26 special meeting to potentially hire a city manager.

The city has been searching for a city manager since Dave Slezickey resigned early this year to take the same position at The Village in Oklahoma City.

City Clerk Brittney Hladik has been serving as acting city manager in the interim.

Commissioners voted to hire Oklahoma Municipal Management Services to aid in the search for Slezickey’s successor.
