Commissioners, sheriff briefly discuss SROs

By

County commissioners on Monday discussed with Sheriff Aaron Pitts about the possibility of hiring additional deputies to aid local school districts.

Pitts had provided commissioners with preliminary information regarding hiring deputies that would serve as student resource officers (SROs) for Dover and Lomega public schools as well as Chisholm Trail Technology Center.

Other school districts in the county have hired resource officers through their local police departments.

Currently, Deputy Yvonne White covers the three districts in question by herself.

“I don’t know that it’s very effective, honestly,” Pitts said. “It’s too much of an area for her to cover.” Pitts said at the meeting he wasn’t aware it would be an agenda item already and that he still needed to have more detailed discussions with superintendents at each of the school districts before finalizing a plan for commissioners to approve.

But, he said, the sheriff’s department would employ the deputies and the districts would reimburse the department for the hours worked in the district.

Pitts reiterated to the KT&FP after the meeting that the plan is early in the “discussion” stage and that he still had to meet further with school leaders.

He said if it’s something the superintendents want to pursue, then he’ll provide commissioners with a detailed contract for an interlocal agreement with each district.

Commissioners unanimously voted to table the items until more information was available.

Items approved at the meeting included a road right of way for a 10-inch lay flat line in District 2 for Howard Drilling Enterprises LLC and for a one-inch steel line in District 1 for Lisa Kalman.

Commissioners also approved adjustments to county bridge invoices from County Engineering District 8 in the amounts of $1,100.87 and $864.45.
