Kingfisher County Assessor Carrie Turner noted some incorrect information in a story in the Oct. 13 edition entitled: “KPS asks Supreme Court to reverse excise board decision.”

The second-to-last paragraph of the story read: “The district is seeking emergency relief because the estimate of needs must be sent to the county assessor by Nov. 1.”

It derived from a line in the district’s court filing against the excise board that read: “Because the estimate of needs will be submitted to the County Assessor by November 1, 2024, this action is brought in the Supreme Court for Emergency Relief from Respondent’s unlawful act.”

Turner pointed out the estimate of needs is not turned into the assessor and wanted to clarify the role of her office: “The assessor’s job is to discover, list and maintain records of each real property and personal property in Kingfisher County. We notify the property owners of any increase in the fair cash value of their property. We mailed out increase of value notices on May 1, 2024. The notice gives an estimate of the taxes based on last year’s school levy. This year’s school levy will be the determining factor in the tax amount that will be due in December. The assessor does not raise taxes; the school levy does.”
