County gets weekend rainfall

By

Welcome rain showers late last week and Sunday evening boosted county small grain fields – from those recently sown to those already up and growing.

Local Weather Observer Steve Loftis recorded another .35 inch of rain at the National Weather Service station in Kingfisher but some individuals’ gauges showed more in the area – up to 1.3 inches along Shafenberg Road east of Kingfisher.

The Kingfisher Mesonet station recorded .28 inch for the last four days with Watonga recording .32 inch and Guthrie .48 inch.

Tom Arms, three miles west of Kingfisher, recorded .3 inch for the entire rain period.

Mike Reid, southwest of Kingfisher along Park Community Road, reported .3 inch of rain while Twila Adams reported .4 inch at her residence five miles east of Kingfisher.

County OSU Extension Director Bryan Kennedy said the north end of the county received less rainfall than the south side, but noted that earlier sown fields were ready to pasture and that there are already a lot of stocker cattle on the fields.

He said he stood in wheat “shin high” in a field along Skeleton Creek, east of Hennessey, recently.

All fields are flourishing at this point after overcoming green bug and army worm infestations earlier.

Producers growing wheat for harvest and those growing it for stocker cattle pasture are facing opposing “druthers” at this point.

Those growing grain to harvest would prefer cooler weather to slow down the wheat’s rapid growth while those grazing their wheat fields would like to see the weather stay just as it is.

The local forecast calls for a chance of weekend showers.

Cloudy to partly cloudy weather is forecasted for the coming 10 days with highs in the mid 30s and low of 24 degrees on the weekend followed by highs in the mid-40s at mid-week.
