Crescent: Cheerleading’s new ‘title town’

Crescent made more cheer history on Saturday.

But the squad of Lady Tigers is hungry for even more. Crescent was crowned the Class 2A cheerleading state champion after its performance at Union High School in Tulsa. Judges gave the team a score of 252.0, nearly 20 points better than runner-up Okemah.

It was Crescent’s second straight state title in the sport and third in recent years as it also was the 2020 Game Day state champion. “Fighting for a back-to-back is tough,” said Crescent head coach Danyele Walker, who has been the coach for all of the team’s state titles.

Walker said it’s been her job to keep the team focused on the goal at hand.

“Most of the squad has experienced winning a state championship and some of them have won two,” Walker said. “As a coach, you have to keep your athletes grounded and make sure they understand that nobody is going to give you anything.

“You have to prove to the judges and the fans that there is no doubt we are the best.” On the competition mat, Walker said that meant no falls, no bobbles and no drops.

“They did just that,” she said.

Team members are Kristen Buck, Tatum Cummings, Maddie Dimmitt, Breana Thomas, Reydon Walker, Kyleigh Scott, Calen Cox, Micah Lovett, Jaylee Ross, Olivia Scott, Phallioan Dyson, Addy Dalke, Addison Davis, Chloe Johnson, Gracie Ruggs, Angela Martinez, Krystan McConnell, Zori Willson, Kaylin Scott, Ajoria House, Kynlee Ross, Miranda Dimmitt and Ellee Ingram.

Another key, said Walker, was the team buying what she and fellow coach Karley Ross were selling.

“Another thing that must happen is that we are a team working for each other to be the best we can be,” Walker said. “This group of girls has a great work ethic, they are self-motivated and 100 percent in.”

They’re also obviously intelligent.

Crescent left Union High School with two major pieces of hardware as it was also named the academic state champion for 2A.

The team had a cumulative GPA of 3.922.

The two state titles will fit nicely in Crescent’s trophy case with the regional crown it won the week before.

However, Walker said, the team still wants more.

Game Day state is in November. No 2A team has won both competitive cheer and Game Day state titles in the same year.

Winning that title - along with potentially another academic crown - would make Crescent the first.

“We’ve checked off three of our goals for this year,” Walker said. “We have two more we would like to accomplish in November.”
