Crews working long, hot days to wind up harvest

By

Wheat harvest hummed along this week in Kingfisher County as clear skies and hot temperatures paved the way for long days for combine crews.

Estimates on status of the harvest ranged from half done to complete.

Jason Kroener of CHS estimated that the harvest was at the halfway point for a number of CHS sites but 10 percent below that at the Okarche CHS elevator.

Kroener said quality continued good wth 60-pound per bushel test weights.

He said a little sprout damage had been observed but protein content continued high.

A spokesman at CHS elevator in Hennessey estimated the harvest at 90% complete while the Okarche Feed and Grain Elevator indicated the harvest was complete.

John Schaefer, manager of Cashion Grain and Feed estimated harvest there at 75% complete.

“Quality is still okay with No.1 test weights.

While many yields were in the 15- to 20-bushel-per acre range – the result of drought-afflicted growing season – some yields in the 45-50 bushel range had been reported.

“It’s been a tough year,” Schaefer reflected.

Randall Varnell, manager of Wheeler Brothers Grain elevators in Kingfisher County, was in the Loyal area checking fields Friday morning and not available for comment for this edition.
