CTTC students excel in district skills contest

Two students from Chisholm Trail Technology Center’s automotive service technology program competed Feb. 8 in the District SkillsUSA contest hosted by Canadian Valley Technology Center in El Reno.

Alec Schilde from Dover and Isaiah Pirtle from Kingfisher represented CTTC after winning the local contest held at CTTC among the a.m. and p.m. classes.

“They used their skills to solve hands-on problems such as diagnosing faulted electrical circuits, determining suspension problems, and measuring brake parts with precision tools,” said Coty Green, CTTC automotive services instructor.

Other schools that competed from District 1 include Autry Technology Center, High Plains Technology Center, Northwest Technology Center-Alva Campus, Northwest Technology Center-Fairview Campus, Pioneer Technology Center and Canadian Valley Technology Center.

Schilde placed second while Pirtle placed fourth among the more than 20 other students.

Both students earned prizes and certificates as well as medals and ribbons at the contest for placing in the top-six.

Schilde will be moving onto the state SkillsUSA contest held in April. He will be competing against the top-three high schoolers from the other five districts in Oklahoma, representing different regions in the state.

“They have both impressed me all year long. In the classroom and in the laboratory, they work hard and stay on task,” Green added of Schilde and Pirtle.

“The content of the district contest is not revealed beforehand, so it’s a tough event to prepare for and do well at. We simulated some of the tasks I thought they might be tested on over the past few weeks, but about half the tasks were ones they had not seen before, or not prepared for. So it really speaks to their skills that they did so well.”

The students also earned prizes for winning the local contest at CTTC.

NAPA of Kingfisher donated prizes for both local and district contests.

For winning the local contest, Pirtle and Schilde both received a professional series NAPA-brand lighted workbench and shop stool.
