Dennis Flynn At Okarche, 1922
–
Note: Dennis Flynn was a well-respected delegate to the U.S. Congress during the Territorial Days of Oklahoma. As a delegate, he was allowed to speak on any measure, but was not allowed to vote. He served at the position for eight years. He was speaking in the news article below against Oklahoma City Mayor John Walton, who was running for governor of the state at the time.
Dennis Flynn spoke to an enthusiastic crowd at Okarche Saturday afternoon that filled the Legion Hall.
His speech was not an attack on Mayor Walton personally, but on the Shawnee Socialistic platform. Every statement that Flynn made, he read from the records to prove his assertion.
He said that all the anarchists, Bolsheviks, I.W.W.’s (International World Workers Union), Socialists, draft dodgers, pardoned and paroled criminals, whiskey peddlers and highjackers, and a few good Democrats were for Walton.
He said that Walton came from a family of Republicans and was a Republican himself until he came to Oklahoma.
Walton claims to be a life-long Democrat.
Flynn said the reason Walton failed to mention the name of Woodrow Wilson in his speeches was that Pat Nagle said he could not hold his bunch in line if he mentioned Wilson.
He stated that the Socialist party or the bunch that adopted the Shawnee platform had no regard for flag, God Almighty, religion, citizenship or any other of the institutions that the American people hold dear.
