Dover farmer-rancher named CARE champion
Frank Caldwell of Dover has been named a Conservation and Agriculture Reach Everyone (CARE) Champion by the Oklahoma Black Historical Research Project.
The CARE project’s objective is to increase minority and veteran participation in USDA programs in Oklahoma and Texas.
Over the next year, Caldwell will serve as an ambassador to the local community, sharing his experience utilizing USDA programs.
Caldwell is a veteran farmer/rancher whose operation includes raising small grains, as well as a cow/calf operation. Caldwell has been involved in agriculture most of his life and is president of the East Dover Farmers and Ranchers Association.
Caldwell said he’s always enjoyed working on the farm and feels a closeness to the environment, adding that he’s ready to share his positive experience with other veteran minority farmers and ranchers.
When asked what advice he would give to minority producers who are unsure about applying for USDA farm programs, Caldwell said: “Farmers should give USDA programs a try.”
The CARE project is a partnership effort of the Oklahoma Association of Conservation Districts, the Oklahoma Black Historical Research Project Inc., Texas Agriforestry Small Farmers & Ranchers and USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service.
