Dover School foundation provides nearly $8k to teachers via grants

The Dover Public School Foundation recently awarded nearly $8,000 in grants to the school district’s teachers.

The grant awards continued a tradition that dates back nearly 30 years.

The foundation is a non-profit, tax deductible organization with 501(c) (3) status formed in 1994 by citizens who were interested in providing the best education possible to Dover’s children.

It was formed for the purpose of collecting and distributing contributions from individuals, organizations and businesses for the benefit of the students.

“The goal of the foundation is to enhance learning opportunities, provide enrichment of the curriculum, stimulate creativity, encourage community involvement, and to build pride, instill confidence and inspire commitment in the Dover Public School,” said Cathy Howard, former longtime Dover teacher and administrator and now the president of the foundation’s board.

Currently joining Howard on the board are: Nina Collums, vice president; Cindy Tucker, secretary; Clay Barker; Abette Bryan; Cheryl Bullis; Dawn Garlett; Stephanie Guinn; and Leah Mueggenborg.

Among its activities is an academic banquet hosted annually to present academic achievement awards to all junior high and high school students with a 3.0 or above GPA for the school year.

The total amount distributed via grants this year was $7,793.

Funds are raised through donations by community businesses and individuals and an annual can drive.

The can drive donation amount is matched by Hennessey/Dover Masonic Lodge.

This year’s drive netted $350.

The third grade class had the most participation and was rewarded with a pizza party.

Pre-k student Blayklee Lombardo was the individual with the most cans collected.
