Excellent county harvest all but complete
The Kingfisher County wheat harvest was in its final stages at mid-week.
County elevator operators indicated the harvest was nearly all done.
Randall Varnell, manager of Wheeler Brothers Grain in Kingfisher, said that only a few spots were left, commenting it was 99.9% complete.
Jason Kroener of CHS elevators said the harvest was wrapped up and was one of the best in awhile, matching another outstanding harvest 20 years ago.
Yields and quality held up throughout the harvest. Wheat weights held steady at No. 1 quality (60 lbs. per bushel and above) and yields were excellent with some reports of 70 bushels per acre. Fifty-bushel-peracre yields were common countywide.
CHS Elevator at Hennessey was close to finished Wednesday.
A spokesperson said it would have been completed Wednesday if a .2 inch rain hadn’t arrived early that morning.
A few farmers east of town were still harvesting when the shower arrived, the spokesperson said.
John Schaefer, manager of Cashion Grain and Feed, said the harvest was complete in the Cashion area by midweek.
Ty Elwood, manager of Okarche Grain and Feed, west of Okarche, had a similar report for that vicinity.
The local harvest report agreed with the Oklahoma Wheat Commission report for the statewide harvest.
“Oklahoma wheat harvest continues to move along in all areas of the state. Elevator locations reporting a lot of movement in all areas with many of the southern and central regions getting closer to the finish line,” according to the report. “Great progress has also been made the last few days in north central and northeastern Oklahoma. Oklahoma Wheat Commission is calling wheat harvest for the state 75% complete.
