Expansion plans for HPS transportation site on S.H. 51 get thumbs up from board

An “initial draft” of architectural plans for an addition to the school’s State Highway 51 transportation building were approved by the Hennessey Board of Education Monday night.

The 6,800 square foot, free-standing shop building will be west of the existing 6,500 square foot bus barn completed in February 2011.

The new shop building is expected to cost between $1 million and $1.1 million, the board was told by Superintendent Jason Sternberger.

He said the district has $1.4 million in the building fund so that will leave it with $350,000. He also said the district can expect another $700,000 in that fund by the end of the school year.

The new structure will include bays for making repairs and washing buses as well as an office and restrooms.

Sternberger said they can expect to get a final set of plans from Renaissance Architecture, Oklahoma City, in August. That would lead to a bid opening and awarding of bids in September and work starting in six months.

“We won’t need a construction manager on this job because it’s a smaller project,” Sternberger said.

“That’s because you’re our construction manager,” said Board Vice President Patrick Griffin.

Current Shop Building

There has been no decision about what to do with the current shop building, said Sternberger.

“But I imagine some coaches will be interested in it because of its location (between the baseball/football and track fields).”

He also mentioned that even though school doesn’t start until next month “we have three sports that start this Saturday.”

Superintendent’s Report

Sternberger said they are finishing up some summer projects with more flooring coming in late this month, work on seats at the Eagle Event Center and minor electrical work at the daycare.

He said the extension made at the daycare will increase caring for 20 to 30 kids, instead of adding only three kids as he’d earlier said.

High School Handbook

The superintendent said Principal Josh Faulkner was unable to attend the meeting.

The board approved the changes after Sternberger briefed them on “some cleaning up verbiage,” added chemistry, changes in length of jeans allowed, etc.

Personnel

Resignations: Korey Walker, wrestling/football coach, and Michelle Emerich, daycare worker.

Hirings: Emily Evans, walking track, and ShiAnn Fisher, daycare worker.

Extra duty assignments: Rachel Franks, elementary chorus, $1,000, and Chelsea Hoeltzel, athletic trainer, $6,000, and summer athletic trainer, $4,000.

Other Business

Among a list of 14 items on the consent agenda approved by the board were:

• Fundraisers – Volleyball, Online Store for Apparel, TBD; Early Childhood, T-shirts, August; FFA, metal art, Aug. 23June 24.

• Surplus property – 82 monitors, 25 desktops, 4 personal printers, 24 Thinkpad T460, 10 Thinkpad T470, 2 Dell P25T, 1 Thinkpad E560, 1 Dell E6420, 7 Lenovo 11e, 5 ASUS ZenPad, 22 iPads, 6 Lenovo N23 Yoga, 3 Lenovo N23 Windows, 16 Dell 3189, 5 Thinkpad P14s, 1 Backup Battery, 1 HP Pro Curve 2810 Switch 1 NVR, 1 LightSpeed Redcat, 5 Newlines, 3 Califone, 1 Polycom, and 1 43” TV.

At the meeting

All board members were present: President Luke Lough, Griffin, Clerk Dr. James Matthew Matousek, David Tillman and Amy Charmasson.

Also at the board table were Sternberger and Acting Minutes Clerk Randi Franklin.

In the audience were school staffers Todd Cameron, technology director, and Rae Fuksa, tech assistant and middle school teacher.
