An event in Colorado prompted a road trip for a Kingfisher man and his two sons.

The event was a car show and a cruise through the mountains west of Monte Vista.

The road trippers were Chuck Henderson and his sons Kris and Kurt.

Their transportation was a 63-year-old 1960 Chevrolet two-door station wagon.

The wagon had been updated with a late model Chevrolet engine, automatic transmission, turbo charger, disc brakes, power steering and an air conditioner.

The trio left Kingfisher on an early-June Friday and traveled through the Oklahoma panhandle.

Just before making it out of Oklahoma, they stopped in Kenton for lunch.

“A very nice lady cooked hamburgers for the travelers in the Mercantile building and a tour through the museum made the visit complete,” said Chuck.

The next stop was Capulin, N.M., to view the Capulin Volcano National Monument, which Chuck called “very interesting.”

From there, the Hendersons completed their trek to Monte Vista.

The group met the next morning with the tour or-ganizers.

The tour took them to South Fork, then northwest to Creede and then up the mountain to Clear Creek Falls.

The group returned to Monte Vista where the station wagon was parked in the car show for the rest of the day.

On the return trip Sunday, the Hendersons traveled through scenic Cuchara, Colo., and then on to Dalhart, Texas, for lunch and “a welcome break in the travel,” said Chuck.

The station wagon made its way back through the Texas panhandle, through western Oklahoma and back to Kingfisher.

“Three days, four states, 1,500 miles and a great time,” said Chuck.
