Filing for municipal seats begins

Deadline is Wednesday for candidates to vie for 12 positions in the county

By

Filing starts Monday for municipal offices in four Kingfisher County towns or cities.

Candidates interested in filing for municipal offi ces can file Declarations of Candidacy beginning 8 a.m. Monday, Feb 6.

The forms must be completed and submitted to the Kingfisher County Election Board no later than 5 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 8, said Election Board Secretary Shawna Butts.

Butts said Contests of Candidacy must be filed no later than Friday, Feb. 10, and may only be filed by another candidate for that office, unless a candidate files unopposed.

The election for the positions is Tuesday, April 4.

Declarations of Candidacy will be accepted for the following offices: City of Kingfisher

Up for grabs will be two seats on the city commission.

One is a three-year unexpired term left open when Ryan Deatherage resigned late last year.

The other is a fouryear term currently held by Wendell Prim. Prim is completing his second four-year term and, under city charter guidelines, is not eligible to run again for another year.

Town of Dover

Three of the five trustee seats will be open.

They are currently held by Mike Walters, Sheila Holmes and Brian Chestnut.

All are for four-year terms.

Town of Hennessey

Three trustee seats are up for election and are currently held by Mayor Bert Gritz, Vice Mayor Clif Vogt and Trustee Richard Simunek.

Also open will be the office of town clerk.

All offices are four-year terms.

Vogt has said he’ll run again, while Gritz and Simunek said last month they’re undecided. Holdover trustees are Harold Shaw and David Jones.

Current Town Clerk Kati Walters told the Times & Free Press she won’t file for re-election.

Town of Okarche

The town has seats open in two wards as well as the office of town clerk.

All are four year terms. The incumbents are Matt Blackwood in Ward 1 and Jeff Brueggen in Ward 3.

Dana Reese is the town clerk.

Some Kingfisher County voters also fall within the voting lines of the City of Piedmont, which had two city ward positions open as well as that of mayor.

Ward 3 is currently held by Austin Redus and Ward 5 by Melissa Ashford.

Both are three-year terms. Piedmont’s current mayor is Kurt Mayabb. That will be a four-year term.
