Fitness, fun focus of new grant app

Public input sought at Tuesday evening meeting at KHS

Kingfisher can anticipate a new grant opportunity to promote healthier living and fitness, local grantwriter John Gooden said.

Gooden, chairman of Kingfisher Trails Inc., is pursuing a grant opportunity for the city of Kingfisher that will bring a variety of new initiatives to the community and its youth.

“If successful, Kingfisher would be one of only four communities to win such a grant this year from the TSET (Tobacco Settlement Endowment Trust) Fund,” Gooden said.

Under the acronymn “FEEL” (Fitness, Exercise, Eating and Learning), the grant application seeks funding for a variety of projects in various locations in the community, Gooden said.

One of the proposed projects is a “Fitness Park” outside the west side of the high school.

“This facility would include some interesting and comfortable spaces for gathering, fitness equipment, outdoor games and some artwork,” Gooden said.

Though success is not guaranteed, Gooden will present the opportunity to the school board Monday night and to anyone interested in the proposed projects at a public meeting at KHS at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Public input is vital to the success of the program, Gooden said.

Six other projects are included in the grant application: a community garden in the city’s West Bottom, a disc golf course, improvements to the outdoor classroom in Briscoe Crossing, mileage markers and wayfinding signs along the trails, and improvements to the pump track and playground in the Newfield Community Park.

Kingfisher Community Collaborative is a partner in the grant proposal and will have a role in tracking the progress and effects of the program on community health and wellness.

Anyone interested in participating in the citizens review committee are invited to attend Tuesday’s meeting or contact Erin Michael at the high school.

Gooden is officed in Interbank and is available for questions, he said.
