Flowers are blooming on Hennessey’s Main Street
Renee (Vaverka) Curry is smiling now and that could be because that’s her last delivery of flower containers to downtown Hennessey businesses. Curry is not only the Hennessey United Association’s beautification chairman, but the entire committee. Some businesses had plans to put flowers in front of their buildings, but those who didn’t were asked if they wanted the non-profit group to provide one. There were some flower pots left from previous years, but more were added this year and United also purchased flower pot stands. Curry used plenty of soil and plants, plus lots of “TLC” to get the containers ready for delivery. This year it took her “all day to empty the pots, put drain holes in some, mix old soil and put plastic items in the bottom to make the pots so they weren’t so heavy,” she said. “It took me half a day to plant them,” she said, “and then it rained on them and they all smiled.” She said her mom and both grandmothers gardened “and I just thought that was what you needed to do.” She started gardening in the late 1970s and early 1980s “when I lived somewhere that had dirt to plant anything in.” When was asked if she’s a “master gardener,” she said, “No, but I like to think I am.” She also has deep roots in Hennessey. Curry graduated from HHS in 1974, later taught at the Hennessey Middle School and is currently the HPS administrator of student information. She is also known for acting in a school play a few years ago. [Photo provided]
