FOL’s annual cookoff slated Feb. 8 and offers a new twist

Three more cold weather family food favorites have been added to the Friends of the Library’s annual chili cookoff competition this year.

That event is named, “The Many Flavors of Hennessey Cookoff.”

New “flavors” are stews, soups and Mexican beans, but you can be sure chili will also be on the menu, and could even be a winner. The fundraiser is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 8, from 5:30-7 p.m. at the Hennessey High School cafeteria.

Costs to taste, and be eligible for door prizes, are: adults, $6; children under 12, $3 and an immediate family pass, $15.

A“covetedChef’sapron” will be the first place prize in each of these events: People’s Choice, Cook’s Choice, and Top Dollar, say planners.

How to Compete

To sign up to compete in the cookoff, call one of these FOL members: Flo Mills (405-853-5147); Pat Vaverka (405-853-1108) or Cass Hobbs (405-206-2730).

Cooks are required to set up from 4:30-5 p.m.; supply a crock pot/electric roaster with their entry, a long extension cord and a serving utensil; be present 5-5:30 p.m. for Cook’s Choice voting and at 5:30 p.m. when the event is open to the public.

Door Prizes

If you have prizes to donate, but are unable to attend the event, contact any member of the Hennessey Friends of the Library or staff at the public library.

How Proceeds are Spent

The cookoff is the Friends of the Library’s “major fundraiser,” say planners.

For the past 25 years those proceeds have been used to support the public library with book purchases and summer reading programs, the Helen Cline Scholarship Fund, Dolly Parton Imagination Library and Haunted Library treats at Halloween. This past fall they also bought a storage barn for supplies used in their annual Pumpkin Patch on Main Street.
