Approximately 900 high school actors, photographers, dancers, singers, writers, visual artists, filmmakers and musicians across the state auditioned for the 2024 Oklahoma Summer Arts Institute at Quartz Mountain (OSAI).

Kingfisher High School senior Roger Dale Freels, Jr., was one of the 240 students selected to attend the one-of-a-kind arts education program which will be held June 8-23 at Quartz Mountain State Park and Lodge.

Freels, the son of Roger Sr. and Jennifer Freels, was chosen to participate in the film and video category.

“When I got notified about being accepted for OSAI, I was overwhelmed with joy,” said Freels.

“The last few months my future has seemed uncertain, but this is a huge opportunity and could shape my future,” he added.

In existence for almost five decades some of the program’s exceptional alumni include Tim Blake Nelson and Megan Mullally.

Renowned teaching artists from around the world will travel to Quartz Mountain to provide collegiate- level training and mentorship to the students in one of eight disciplines in the literary, visual, and performing arts. OSAI’s multidisciplinary structure sets the Institute apart, allowing students both intense study in their chosen discipline and new exposure to unfamiliar art forms.

Unlike other state arts programs, every student accepted to the institute receives a full scholarship to attend. The Oklahoma State Department of Education, the Oklahoma Arts Council, the National Endowment for the Arts and numerous private foundations and individuals underwrite the program costs to ensure that OSAI is within reach for all of Oklahoma’s young artists.

Students from across the state will have the opportunity to study within their chosen field and attend or participate in performances, gallery openings, film screenings, poetry readings, and more. Other activities include nature hikes, karaoke night, a talent show and a dance.

“I’m looking forward to working with Jeffrey Palmer, Alan Novey, and Shannon O’Shea,” Freels said.

“I can’t wait to see how this experience will impact my future.”
