Those who do much of the behind-the-scenes work to promote local libraries are being celebrated this week.

National Friends of Libraries Week is being observed Oct. 16-22.

It’s the 17th consecutive year the non-profit groups have been recognized and promoted by the American Library Association for their contributions to local libraries.

“Their dedication to their local libraries leaves a lasting and positive impact on their libraries and their communities,” said LaRita Sipe, librarian at Kingfisher Memorial Library.

Kingfisher Friends of the Library is no exception, Sipe added.

“It’s an active group of people looking for ways to support the happenings of our library,” Sipe said. “It’s a non-profit, volunteer organization with the aim to promote the resources, services and needs of our library.”

( Note: For more on the Kingfisher Friends of Library, see ad on Page 14 of this edition.)

Kingfisher Friends of the Library meets at 9:30 a.m. on the second Tuesday each month at the library. Yearly dues are $10.

Some of the recent and continuing efforts of the local Friends group include:

• Promoting the Children’s Summer Reading Program;

• Purchasing Ancestry. com Library Edition for patrons’ use;

• Supporting Story Time for ages birth to 4 years old;

• Helping purchase giveaways for the Adult Reading Challenge;

• Purchasing new computers for patrons’ use;

•Sponsoringthelibrary’s teen Computer Build Class.

The Kingfisher Friends group will be hosting a book sale Oct. 28-29 at the library’s Community Room.

The sale helps support some of the Friends’ efforts at the library.

“We encourage you to visit Kingfisher Memorial Library and while there, learn more about programs offered through library Friends’ groups,” Sipe said.

“Find out how to become a member. Donate to their programs and support their efforts.”
