Gas line replaced in Hennessey after Monday scare
Parents at Hennessey’s municipal pool on North Mitchell Road alerted staff about the strong odor of gas at about 4:45 p.m. Monday afternoon.
That’s when Town Administrator Tiffany Tillman said she notified Oklahoma Natural Gas, “but I called 911 first,” she told The Times & Free Press.
“The gas line was pinched off by 7:54 p.m. and replaced at 3 p.m. today (Tuesday),” she said and later added that no injuries were reported.
When asked why the town’s Code Red telephone warning system wasn’t activated, Tillman said, “Not everyone has a phone with them so we evacuated the pool and EMTs, firefighters and police officers went door-to-door evacuating “We also cordoned off streets to stop traffic going into that area,” Tillman said.
That area is the southwest corner of Iowa Street and Mitchell Road.
It’s where an Edmond Grade Work Construction LLC crew “hit a gas line,” Tillman said.
They were working on the town’s waterline replacement project on the west side of Mitchell Road. That work is in street-side ditches that front parking at Hennessey’s pre-K, elementary and middle school, and a north section of the high school.
That is a congested area which is closed from time to time due to the waterline work and the school’s parking lot work at the sports complex on the east side of Mitchell Road.
