Grant paves way for new county bridge

A federal grant is going to lead to a new bridge in Kingfisher County.

Heath Dobrovolny, chairman of Kingfisher County’s board of commissioners, announced the grant award on Thursday.

It will allow for construction of a bridge located on NS2740 Road (Calumet blacktop), about two-and-a-half miles south of State Highway 33.

That sits in District 3, which is Dobrovolny’s district. The 150-foot bridge will be constructed of concrete and steel.

Dobrovolny said the new bridge is a part of a Circuit Engineering District (CED) No. 8 bridge bundle grant with four other CED 8 counties through the Infrastructure Improvements and Jobs Act (IIJA).

“The IIJA is a five-year grant program for state and local infrastructure projects and includes several different grants for road and bridge infrastructure,” Dobrovolny explained.

CED 8 was one of nine recipients in the nationwide grant.

In all, CED 8 was awarded $11.5 million to build five bridges. The others will be built in Noble, Garfield, Woods and Major counties.

Dobrovolny added that there are several qualifying and disqualifying aspects through the grant programs, which make it quite competitive for rural counties.

“So we are very fortunate to be awarded this grant,” Dobrovolny said.

“This award will save Kingfisher County District 3 approximately $500,000 in construction costs.”

Construction of the new bridge is expected to begin September 2025 and be completed by September 2027.

Dobrovolny said it is a bridge bundle project, meaning a single winning bidder will construct all of the CED 8 bridges.

Phillips Bridge Construction

Starts Next Year

The long-awaited construction of another county bridge will begin before that.

Dobrovolny said construction is set to begin in 2024 to replace the old Phillips Bridge on EW760 (Lemon Road).

The bridge has been shut down since 2019.

Both federal and state funds will allow for construction of that bridge, Dobrovolny said.
