The Hennessey High School speech and debate team won the Class 3A regional championship held March 25-26 at Northwestern Oklahoma State University in Alva.

The team will compete at the OSSAA’s Class 3A state tournament April 8-9 on the campus of the University of Oklahoma in Norman.

HHS speech team placings at the regional tournament were:

• Original Oratory – second place, Ashland Crites

• Standard Oratory – first place, Taylor Ladwig

• Foreign Extemporaneous – first place, Crites

• Domestic Extemporaneous – second place, Jaden Matthews; third place, Milisa Heskett; fourth place, Ladwig

• Poetry – third place, Jaden Matthews

• Prose – second place, Jaret Matthews

• Policy Debate – first place, Ladwig and Jayden Hladik; second place, Crites and Heskett; third place, Valarie Holguin and Jude Hestand

• Humorous Duet – second place, Heskett and Jaden Matthews; fourth place, Laura Ullery and Aidan Hardin

• Dramatic Duet – third place, Jaret Matthews and Hladik

• Lincoln-Douglas Debate – third place, Ullery

• Monologue – first place, Ullery

Hennessey’s team was second place in the championship sweepstakes at Crescent Feb. 25-26.

It won the 3A sweepstakes at Marlow Nov. 19-20 and the Okarche 3A sweepstakes title Nov. 5-6.

The team’s coach and teacher is Nathanial Parker.
