Hood competing in DYW national finals
Recent KHS grad takes part in 3-day competition in Mobile
Kingfisher’s Kylie Hood is in Mobile, Ala., this weekend taking part in the 67th Distinguished Young Women National Finals.
The competition was set for June 27-29 at the Mobile Civic Center.
Hood is one of 50 representatives competing for $155,000 in cash scholarships and the opportunity to represent the program as the Distinguished Young Woman of America for 2024.
Following her selection as the Distinguished Young Woman of Oklahoma last July, Hood began preparations for the national finals, which includes five categories of evaluation: scholastics, interview, fitness, talent and self-expression.
The competition is the culmination of two weeks in Mobile for Hood.
During her time there, she’s taken part in team building activities, completed community service projects, interacted with the Gulf Coast community through various events and engaged in man hours of rehearsal in preparation for the three-night scholarship program.
“We are excited to welcome the 50 outstanding state representatives to Mobile for the 67th annual National Finals of Distinguished Young Women,” said Carole Hegwood, executive director of Distinguished Young Women.
“These young women are accomplished, talented, intelligent and have exciting futures ahead of them.”
If selected as the program’s overall winner, Hood will spend the next year representing Distinguished Young Women across the country through various appearances and promoting the program’s national outreach initiative of Be Your Best Self.
The outreach program is designed to combat major issues facing children today including childhood obesity and high school dropout rates, as well as encourage young people to take an active interest in their communities through service.
The outreach program consists of five elements – Be Healthy, Be Involved, Be Studious, Be Ambitious and Be Responsible.
Hood is a 2024 graduate of Kingfisher High School and the daughter of Janet and Shane Hood.
During high school, she was also active in golf qualifying for state all four years - and accomplished in several aspects of FFA.
She was a class valedictorian and vice president of both the National Honor Society and the FFA chapter.
Hood plans to attend Oklahoma State University and major in agricultural communications.
