HPS approves teacher, extra-duty pay scales

The salary schedule for certified teachers and extra duty assignments for 202324 were approved by the Hennessey Board of Education during last Monday’s regular June meeting.

The move was made after a 90-minute executive session.

“We will pay an average of $1,250 above each step of the state’s minimum salary schedule,” Superintendent Jason Sternberger told the KT&FP.

“We also pay the 7% teachers’ portion of their retirement which isn’t required,” he added after the meeting.

New teachers with no experience and a bachelor’s degree will be paid $40,821, a master’s degree pays $42,211 and doctorate $43,601.

Those with five years’ experience will earn $44,030, $45,420 and $46,810 with those respective degrees; 10 years’ experience pays $47,904, $49,788 and $52,165; 15 years earns $51,387, $53,272 and $55,650; 20 years pays $53,872, $55,758 and $58,137; 25 years and more will pay $57,269, $59,191 and $61,615.

“Based on years of experience, this is the state-funded pay raise going in to the minimum salary schedule: 0-4 years, $3,000; 5-9 years, $4,000; 10-14 years, $5,000, and 15-plus years, $6,000,” Sternberger said.

Present at Meeting

All board members attended the June 12 meeting: President Luke Lough, Vice President Patrick Griffin, Clerk Dr. James Matthew Matousek, David Tillman and Amy Charmasson.

In addition to Sternberger the only other staff member attending was Office Manager Timberly Jech, who also serves as recording clerk.

There were no other school staffers or visitors in the audience.

Sports Stipends

The extra duty pay scale was approved, but no assignments have been made.

The positions will pay: Athletic Director (HS $5,000; MS $1,000). Baseball HS head, $6,500, assistant $1,500; MS head, $1,500, assistant, $1,000; summer head, $2,000. Basketball Boys HS head $6,500, assistant, $1,500; JH head $1,500, JH assistant, $1,000; 5/6 boys $750; summer head, $2,000, assistant $1,500. Basketball Girls HS head $6,500, assistant, $1,500; JH head $1,500, JH assistant, $1,000; 5/6 girls $750; summer head, $2,000, assistant $1,500. Cheerleading HS coach, $1,800; MS, $850; summer, $1,000.

Cross country HS boys $2,000; HS girls $2,000; JH boys/girls head $1,500; HS/JH boys/girls assistant $1,500; summer track and CC $2,000; E-sports $1,500. Hirings

The board approved these five teachers for adjunct positions: Matthew Fuksa, physical education; Kim Fehring- Gritz, chemistry and computer science; Stephanie Guinn, art; Brady Page, intermediate mathematics (math of finance); and Paul Raupe, physics.

Sternberger said they are still looking for an elementary teacher, but hired Amber Beaman as a daycare worker and Megan Wright as an elementary aide/monitor for the walking track.

Summer staffers hired are Rae Fuksa, Chelsea Hoeltzel and Shelby Black.

The board voted to make a state deregulation application, per state statute, which allows one librarian to continue to serve both high and middle school students.

Alt-Ed Classes Discontinued In the past, the school has had only six to eight students in the alternative education classes, said Sternberger.

He recommended, and the board approved, discontinuing that program. If there are 10 or more students in that program then it would be required, he said.

In past years, Hennessey and Dover worked together to teach those classes.

LED Lighting Upgrade

The superintendent proposed, and the board agreed, to authorize an equipment lease/purchase agreement with Community State Bank for installation of LED lighting throughout the school district.

The agreement is for a 5.5% rate on a five-year note with no penalty for an early payoff, Sternberger said.

He said the note will cover the estimated $189,000 cost from Farmers Electric to purchase and install the lighting.

The school could get as much as $12,000 in incentive money, Sternberger said.

Kaleb Hladik told him he’d get the equipment in about one month and should be finished with the installation at the start of school, he told the board.

Superintendent’s Facility Report

• They’re finishing the vinyl fencing and concrete curb on the northeast corner of the elementary school to separate the outdoor classroom, Sternberger said.

• Daycare storage on the south end has been moved into storage near the technology room. The district is adding a wall to give the daycare more space so they can get three to five more kids in there, he said.

• Seats in the upper section of the Eagle Event Center on the east side will match the lower level. Individual chair backs with armrests will be in the three middle sections. Bench seats with chair backs will be on the outside sections.

• The computer technology room in the back of the middle school is being moved to make room for the counselor’s office. The IT room is being moved to the southwest corner of the high school, but the servers aren’t being moved.

• Remodeling at the Family & Consumer Science classroom is on schedule. “Everything inside has been demolished. They are fixing some plumbing and electrical spots then will reinstall new cabinets and appliances,” Sternberger said. “The carpet is scheduled to be in the last week in July.”

• A rough draft of the transportation building should be ready for the board to see at the July meeting. The plan is to review the final plans in August, and start the competitive bidding process and select the winning bidder in September. “Hopefully we get some local bids,” Sternberger said.

• Drainage ditch at the elementary school needs to be covered in a few inches of concrete, said Lough. He said if there was a leak in the town’s waterline they could easily get through the concrete and fix it. “It needs to be leveled,” said Griffin. “I don’t want a ditch there.”

• About 30 feet on the east side of the administrative office is cracking and will be repaired.

• Curbing is finished outside Eagle Event Center.

• The football pavilion and baseball canopy are scheduled to get started as soon as it dries out so they can begin concrete work.

• Six metal frames (exterior doors at the event center, auditorium, daycare and west side of old gym) and a garage door are faded and will be painted.

Consent Agenda

There were 30 items on this month’s consent agenda.

They ranged from revised budgets to usual items to start the 2023-24 school year by making administrative appointments, renewal of contracts with providers and other agreements.
