HPS board sets bid opening for Mitchell Road parking

Concrete parking at Hennessey’s football and baseball complex along Mitchell Road will connect with the town’s paved parking for its park and pool.

It will also have lighted parking to match the town’s, Superintendent Jason Sternberger told school board members at their Monday night meeting.

The architect’s plan calls for the project to be finished in August, or September at the latest, he said, and could cost from $550,000 up to $1 million.

There will be two bid options for the board to consider: a base bid for 71 parking spaces (which would allow the school to keep the current lighted sign in place), or 91 spaces (if the sign is taken out).

Sternberger said he thought they should keep the sign.

Dr. James Matthew Matousek asked if the parking places will be as large as they’d discussed earlier.

Yes, said Sternberger, “We’re going to need that extra space for our trucks,” he said.

The parking will run from the sign on the corner, north over the former tennis courts, then north up to the town’s property.

Bid information will be published in the Times & Free Press soon, Sternberger said. The bid opening is noon Thursday, March 14, he said.

The board will need a special meeting March 25 or 26 at the Eagle Event Center conference room to act on the bids.

Bond Sale Scheduled

The board approved the sale of $1.215 million in taxable building bonds for Tuesday, March 12, at noon in the Eagle Event Center conference room.

“We should have two more sales (after that),” Sternberger said.

All Principals Rehired

Upon recommendation by the superintendent, the board unanimously approved the rehiring of all building principals: Stacey Mack, early childhood center; Barry Crosswhite, elementary; Ricardo Tarango, middle school; Josh Faulkner, high school, and Mark Cox, assistant high school and middle school.

Teachers of the Year Recognized

At the start of the meeting all four building Teachers of the Year were recognized by the board. That included their principals who bragged about their teachers and talked about important roles they play for students and the school.

Those teachers chosen by their peers are: Riley Faulkner, high school vocal music director, who was also chosen as District Teacher of Year; Kaylena Grellner, middle school, fifth-sixth grade; Stacy Ward, elementary, fourth grade, and Karla VanGee, early childhood center. The teachers were told about their selection and honored in their classrooms earlier this month. They will also be featured in an upcoming edition of the Times & Free Press.

Superintendent’s Monthly Report

• The transportation building (on State Highway 51) should be finished by mid-to-late April, he said.

• There was a flood at the daycare center and after new flooring is installed, they will be able to move the children back in.

At the Meeting

The four board members were present: President Luke Lough, Vice President Patrick Griffin, Clerk Dr. James Matousek and Amy Charmasson.

The fifth board member, Dakota Semrad, was appointed to the board at the meeting, but did not attend. He will take the oath of offi ce at a later meeting.

Others at the board table were Sternberger and Office Manager Timberly Jech. In addition to all of the principals, another staffer in the audience was Brian Richardson, high school girls basketball coach, Doyle Miller, a candidate for the upcoming school board election, was also in the audience.
